What? after death?

The problem of life beyond death has ever been a most fascinating one from time immemorial. Man has always been intrigued by the question, “What becomes of the Soul after Death?” The present volume, as the title suggests, treats in detail of the subject and furnishes an answer to the agelong question.

In recent times there has been much speculation on this problem. This had led to a lot of research work too. The fact of continuity of consciousness after physical death has come to be accepted as such by most of the modern thinkers, latest of whom, the famous scientist, Dr. J.B. Rhine, has expressed himself in favour of such belief. Many books have been written on this subject, but hitherto most of the works deal mainly with the astral or other spirit world. It has mostly been the study of the conditions in the Pretaloka which is merely one among the numerous supramundane planes beyond the grave. Spiritism, seance and the testimony of recognised mediums have for most part featured prominently in all such works.

This present book by Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj is a departure from the usual line in that it is based, to a great extent, upon authoritative scriptural texts and upon knowledge derived through reasoning, deep reflection and personal meditation. It throws a flood of light upon all aspects of post-mortem existence not adequately dealt with in other works. The book also gives valuable information about the different beliefs on this subject, of the various races and religions.

The portions giving the inner meaning and esoteric significance of the different practices and customs in connection with the dead form a most informative one. The appendix and the stories in the end and the very interesting poems in the beginning are most thought-provoking and highly inspiring.

We feel that the perusal of the present work will confirm man’s belief that ‘death is not the end of life’, that his actions here unfailingly react upon him in the ‘after state’ too and will stimulate his Vichara or power of investigation. We have no doubt that the reader will be helped to make a proper evaluation of the real worth of this physical existence upon the earth plane in the light of this new knowledge of the supracorporeal states of being.

The True Self

The True Self
*************

"Master," the disciple asked, "what exactly is the true self?"

The sage replied, "Ultimately, your true self is the Tao and the Tao is you."

"I find that hard to believe, Master. The Tao is great; I am insignificant. The Tao is powerful; I have but a little strength. The Tao is unlimited; I labor under many limitations. The Tao is everywhere; I can only be in one place at a time. As far as I can tell, the Tao and I are completely different. How can you say that I am ultimately the Tao and the Tao is me?"

Rather than to respond directly, the sage handed the disciple a bowl: "Go to the nearby river with this and use it to bring back some water, then we'll continue the discussion."

The disciple carried out the order, but when he came back, the sage looked at the bowl and frowned. "Didn't I tell you to fetch the water from the river? This can't be it."

"But it is, Master," the disciple was confused by the disapproval. "I collected the water by dipping the bowl into the river. I assure you that this water absolutely is from the river."

"I know the river quite well," the sage said. "All kinds of fish swim in it, but I don't see any fish in this water. Numerous animals come to the river to drink from it, and yet I see no animals in this bowl. Many children from the village frolic in the shallows of the river. Well, I see no children here either. Therefore, this cannot be the water from the river."

"Master, it is only a small amount of water, of course it cannot contain all those things!"

"Oh, I see," said the sage. "Well, in that case, I want you to go pour the water back into the river."

The disciple did so with a puzzled expression on his face. He couldn't help but wonder what had possessed the sage to act so strangely. He completed his task and returned.

"Is the water back in the river?" the sage asked. The disciple nodded.

"Good," said the sage. "That small amount of water you brought back is now the same water that touches the fish, the animals and the children. In fact, everything that the river is now applies to the water we were both looking at just a while ago.

"Think of the river as the Tao and the water in the bowl as your true self. From a limited point of view, that water seems very different from the river. It is understandable how one can be led to believe that the two are not the same and can never be the same. The river is far greater than the bowl of water, just as the Tao is far greater than an individual human being.

"Having carried water from the river, you can now see it from an expanded perspective. The river is the source of the water, just as the Tao is the source of our true inner selves. You saw this for yourself as you dipped the bowl into the river, so you insisted that the water was the same even when I tried to convince you it wasn't.

"When you poured the water back, you saw that the separation of the water from the river was only temporary. It's just like that for the true self. Our physical existence is only a temporary condition. The eternal truth is that our innermost nature comes from, and ultimately returns to, the Tao. When all is said and done, we and the Tao are one."

Just as the bowl contains the water in this story, we have physical bodies that contain our true selves. Having a bowl is useful in that it allows one to carry water from one place to another. Similarly, having a body is useful in that it allows us to experience the physical realm as a part of it.

Sometimes we identify with the body so much, we become attached to it and think of it as the self. That's like mistaking the bowl for the water. The water remains the same no matter what container it occupies. In the same way, your true self remains the essential "you" no matter how your body changes.

Just as the disciple learned a valuable lesson carrying water from the river and back to it again, we also learn from our experiences and various journeys through the material world. Just as the bowl of water is all by itself as it is being carried around, we can also feel alone and isolated as we move through life, working on our individual lesson plans. This feeling, reinforced by physical perceptions, can make us forget that we are all part of a greater self.

The bowl cannot hold water forever. It may be accidentally dropped and smashed to pieces one day, or it may develop cracks and break apart after years of use. Similarly, the physical body cannot last indefinitely. Accidents, injuries, illness or age will eventually render it unusable.

The water must return to the river. Even if the water isn't poured back, but spilled somewhere, it will still flow or seep its way into the river. Similarly, when the body is no longer a suitable vessel, the true self it contains must return to the source. Religious people may call this source God; atheists may call it the laws of nature; we call it the Tao. Whatever its label, it is our point of origin as well as our ultimate destination.

Just as the water becomes one with the river, the true self merges with the Tao. That's when we realize that the feelings of isolation and separation are illusory. You and I are never truly isolated or separated from the divine source of universal creation. We are never truly alone. Oneness, the Tao that unifies all, is the ultimate reality… of the true self.

The Third Floor

The Third Floor

One day, a wealthy man went to another village for a visit. There he saw an imposing mansion that stood three stories tall. He found it most impressive and complimented the owner on this great achievement. The owner thanked him and invited him in for a tour. Together they went up to the third floor, where they took in a commanding view of the countryside.

After the wealthy man returned to his own village, he decided he wanted the same thing. He summoned a master mason and described what he had in mind. The mason said: "You're talking to the right person – I'm the one who built that mansion!"

The wealthy man was pleased: "Great! Then you know exactly what I want. Please get started as soon as possible."

The mason assembled a crew and began building. The wealthy man had never seen a construction before, so he visited the site to take a look. What he saw there baffled him, so he asked the mason: "What is the crew doing?"

"Oh, they're working on the foundation."

"Why?"

The mason did not think the wealthy man was serious, but decided to humor him since he was footing the bill: "Because we build the first floor on top of the foundation – of course."

"But why do you need the first floor?"

Now the mason was certain the wealthy man was joking, so he played along: "Well, we want to build the second floor on top of the first floor."

"And you need the second floor for... what exactly?"

The mason was confused, because he could tell the wealthy man was completely serious. Not knowing what else to say, he replied: "Sir, obviously we'll put the third floor on top of the second floor."

"No! Stop!" The wealthy man exclaimed. "This is a big mistake. I'm glad I'm here to clear it up. I only want the third floor. You don't need to build the foundation and the first two floors. That ought to save us a lot of time and money!"

Doesn't this story seem ludicrous? Isn't it easy to understand that we must start at the bottom and work our way up? How can anyone expect to have the third floor without the floors below it?

But if it is really that easy to understand, why are get-rich-quick schemes still so popular? Can it be because we want to be wealthy (the third floor) but we don't want to work industriously (the foundation), save money (the first floor), and invest wisely (the second floor)?

How did diet pills become a $17 billion dollar industry? Can it be because we want to be thinner (the third floor) but we don't want to eat less (the foundation), exercise more (the first floor), and sustain this discipline over a long period of time (the second floor)?

Lao Tzu addresses this in Tao Te Ching, chapter 70:

My words are easy to understand, easy to practice
The world cannot understand, cannot practice

It is easy for us to understand that in order to achieve something, we must build the framework and create the necessary conditions. But something is lost when we go from concept to reality; our intellectual understanding does not translate to the real world. We still want something for nothing, even though we know that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We still want shortcuts.

This is also something noted by Lao Tzu, in chapter 53 of Tao Te Ching:

The great Tao is broad and plain
But people like the side paths

It is not difficult to traverse the great Tao – it is a wide and flat road, perfect for travelers. We walk this road one step at a time. It is the essence of simplicity. What can possibly be simpler?

But simplicity doesn't seem to be what most people want. Rather than taking the certain path slowly but surely, people are enticed by the bright, colorful, flashing signs by the side of the road. These signs say things like "No Previous Experience Necessary" or "Lose Weight While You Sleep" or "Powerful New Technology! Results Guaranteed!"

This applies not just to life, but also to spiritual cultivation. Most of the time, wisdom comes to practitioners in bits and pieces rather than all at once. Conditioned by the endless promises of instant gratification in the material world, many find this lacking in excitement. Thus, they become dabblers of spirituality. If one particular path doesn't produce immediate results, they flutter to another.

Eventually, they discover that all this impulsive dabbling actually does very little to advance them spiritually. Tempting shortcuts lead them either to dead-end alleys, or right back where they started.

Usually, spiritual dabblers will not realize that they've been spinning their wheels going nowhere. They may even take pride in their "carefree wandering" through all the side paths. Although Lao Tzu's words are easy to understand and easy to practice, they simply cannot understand them, or put them into practical usage.

We all know the saying that the great thousand-mile journey starts with one step. We've all heard it many times, and it is indeed a timeless truth. But there is another part to it that is equally important: that first step is followed by another step, then another, and another, and so on until the great journey is completed.

In fact, it takes about two thousand steps to walk a mile, so a thousand-mile journey would equal to roughly two million steps. In order to have any hope of completing the journey, the traveler must be completely committed to taking every single one of those steps.

This realization may strike the aforementioned Tao dabblers as odd. Aren't we supposed to move through life with the effortless ease of wu wei? When we talk about the great journey as a combination of so many steps, doesn't it seem difficult and tedious?

This is a fairly common misconception in the West. In Asian traditions, the freedom of the Tao has always walked hand-in-hand with long-term, sustained discipline. The two are flip sides of the same coin.

The key realization is that diligent work doesn't have to be tedious. When you make it part of your life pattern, disciplined effort becomes natural. And when you engage in this natural part of your life, you discover in it an effortless ease and carefree joy all its own.

This is really the best way to cultivate. It is a down-to-earth and practical approach that emphasizes consistent action – the simple action of putting one foot in front of the other in the great journey. This is our discipline.

The Chinese would say this is cultivation with "feet stepping on solid ground." The side paths, with their endless promises of a third floor floating in midair, are nothing but illusions. The only real, solid ground we have is the broad and plain path of the Tao. You and I have already taken our first steps on it. Let us continue walking together on this great Tao… one solid step after another!
